Political Communication Institute Mission
Communication is central to democratic institutions and political processes. Conceived as the achievement of communication, democracy and the practice of politics are constructed through the interaction of citizens, elected leaders and candidates, and media. The mission of the Political Communication Institute (PCI) at the University of Missouri is to develop knowledge and promote greater understanding of the role of ethical and effective communication in developing a vibrant participatory democracy and political processes representative of and responsive to all citizens.
In fulfillment of its mission, the Institute will:
- Conduct original research on all facets of media, politics and citizen communication under the auspices of an interdisciplinary community of faculty and graduate students;
- Disseminate scholarship for the academic community through publication and presentation at professional meetings;
- Promote public awareness and understanding of scholarship by translating research findings for journalists, the media, and public policy audiences;
- Sponsor lectures and scholarly programs designed to promote greater understanding of current research within the academic community;
- Sponsor public education programs and activities designed to promote greater citizen understanding of and engagement in political and civic affairs;
- Foster greater interaction between political communication students and scholars and practitioners of politics and political media.
